December 19-22

There will be no spelling this week.

MONDAY: Unit 2 spelling test.
Students will be working on the narrative essay of the prequel to the movie, "The Grinch". Class time will be given to compose the story. What doesn't get completed in class will be considered homework. The rough draft will be due tomorrow.

TUESDAY: SSR/no reading log
Students will begin editing their story and transferring the rough draft into a storybook. We will make these in class.

WEDNESDAY: SSR/no reading log
Students will continue to work on the story.

THURSDAY: SSR/no reading log
Final day to complete storybook. Due at the end of the hour!

MONDAY: Our school counselor, Mrs. Gerhardt, will be here giving the results of the Explorer test. She will also be discussing the job shadowing event which will take place in February.

TUESDAY: SSR/QUESTION
Students will review the rules of comma usage and grade the comma worksheet.
A comma quiz will be given.
Lesson 2 spelling: 5 times each. Word meanings and spelling tricks will be introduced tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY: SSR/PREDICT.
Composition books will be checked for spelling.
Spelling rules will be reviewed, along with word meanings.
Students will be introduced to their next writing assignment. They will be writing a narrative piece telling the story of the Grinch's early years.
They will watch the movie, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

Students will begin their narrative writing project.
This will be in class work.

There will be no spelling this week due to the short week.


MONDAY: SSR: CHARACTERIZE. Students will begin combining sentences using the serial comma and including subordinating conjunctions.
Assignment: Pages 105-106 (handout). Due Tuesday.

TUESDAY: SSR: PREDICT.
Handout over combining sentences will be reviewed in class.
Assignment: Students will take notes over using the comma as an appositive and as interrupters. In class work will be assigned.

WEDNESDAY: FIELD TRIP! Be sure your child has money for lunch. We will be eating at McDonald's.

THURSDAY: SSR: QUESTION.
Students will be introduced to the skill of using commas to separate equal adjectives.
There will be a writing assignment for students to complete during class time.
Reading logs will be due today!

Students will meet in the library today and check out books for book talk. Students will be required to use the handout for Cornell note taking as the book is being read.

Spelling words for Unit 1 will be given and reviewed.
Introduction of the comma will be the focus of the week. Students will take notes over the rules and how to use it effectively in their writing.
Parallelism used in writing good sentences will also be reviewed.

Composition notebooks will be checked for spelling words written five times each.
Students will be begin writing sentences based on the comma rules given.

MONDAY: SSR/CHARACTERIZE
Cornell Notetaking was reviewed for second quarter book reports. Examples were modeled for student understanding. Students were given handouts of expectations. All book reports are due on January 3 (end of the second quarter).
Students reviewed the Unit 4 vocabulary words. Students used context clues to figure out the meaning of the unknown words.
4 fold vocabulary assignment: due Wednesday, November 9.

TUESDAY: NO READING LOG TODAY.
Students will review the use of subordinating conjunctions (AAAWWUBBIS). Students will complete a warm-up assignment over this writing skill.
Students will begin reading the story, "Us and Them". Students will be identify style, voice, and tone as exemplified in the story. The literary term of verbal irony will be introduced as well.

WEDNESDAY: SSR: PREDICT
4 fold vocabulary assignment due.
Students will work with partners and identify examples of humor and irony as used throughout the story.
Assignment: Students will write a brief analysis about the tone of the essay and cite examples taken from the story.

WEDNESDAY: NO SSR TODAY. Students will be introduced to subordinating conjunctions. They will be learning how to implement these words into their writing using correct punctuation.
There will be a 10 minute writing assignment which will be done in class.

THURSDAY: SSR: VISUALIZE. Students will begin sharing their 10 minute writing ideas. Ideas will be posted on the wall to illustrate an understanding of subordinating conjunctions. Assignment: Create 10 sentences using subordinating conjunctions.

Spelling notebooks will be checked for words to be written 5 times each. We will examine sensory imagery as it is used in the writings of Maya Angelou. Students will be identifying sensory details and incorporating it into their writing.

There will be no spelling this week. Our class will be doing Performance Series Testing in the computer lab this week. Spelling will resume next week.


MONDAY: SSR: Connect. Students will take their Week 4 spelling test. We will be studying the components of fictional text as seen in the reading of the story, "Raymond's Run". Students will explore the concepts of exposition, rising action, complication, climax, falling action, and resolution. ASSIGNMENT: Read the story and complete the plot diagram for tomorrow.

TUESDAY: SSR: PREDICT. As a class, we will discuss the components of the story and meet with small groups to answer comprehensive questions. Students will be asked to give a constructed response to one of three questions about "Raymond's Run". The questions must be answered using correct paragraph format. This will be in class work.

WEDNESDAY: COMPUTER LAB FOR TESTING.
